Sample Character-Roll Tables

These are random character generation tables that I regularly use to make characters for stories, especially when I need a group of new characters all at once. My usual method is to write 1 to 10 on a piece of paper, then go down the list rolling on each table once for each character.

You can use an on-line dice roller like this one: DICE ROLLER (you can get real dice that make more accurately random rolls from a game store) by opening the link in a new window and using it alongside this page.

If you do hair color for all ten at once, then hair type for all ten at once, then length, etc. and you keep doing this, you won’t see what you’ve got until you are done, which is much more fun and amusing than rolling up each character one at a time. That way the final results are a surprise.

Remember, if one of the items in your list ends up not working with a character, you can change it to something that makes more sense. Either roll again for that table, or just pick something you like. But go through and roll up all of the features randomly first.

First, I usually flip a coin to determine if the character is male or female. So flip a coin for each of the ten and write M or F, then come back and roll for each list.

Age

You can “weight” this one toward a younger age by subtracting 2 or 3 from the number you roll and using the modified number instead. Decide if you are going to weight it before you roll and then stick to it. If you end up subtracting 2 or 3 from the Pre-Teen Child one, then you have to be a baby! Ha Ha Ha!

Distinctive Features and Quirks

There are two or more options for each number in the Distinctive Features list. For this one I roll once on the 100 sided dice (the double 10 sided), then I roll once on a 2, 3, or 4 sided to determine which feature I get out of the available options. I give each character 2 or 3 Distinctive Features.
